By the end of that second number, the deluge was in full effect. ![]() In retrospect, perhaps putting “Cold Rain and Snow” in the second slot may have been tempting fate a little too brazenly, as the downpour became markedly more intense almost as soon as that song started – and while actual snow would have been a little too on-the-nose (especially in July), the weather deities had a few other tricks up their capacious sleeves, including hail and high winds. Still, all in attendance seemed undaunted by the gathering clouds when the band kicked things off with Buddy Holly’s immortal rock ‘n’ roll anthem “Not Fade Away” – or even when the first palpable droplets started falling within what seemed like seconds of the opening downbeat. Well, for starters, how about the weather? Anyone who’s attended outdoor shows in Colorado can tell you that the area has quite a capacity for meteorological drama, and the forecast for day one indicated that we might be in for a little – or a lot – of that sort of thing. What, we ask you, could be more just exactly perfect? On a 4 th of July weekend at Folsom Field, a venue the band greatly enjoys playing (as proven on visits during each of its three previous Summer sojourns) in Boulder, among the towns in which Dead Heads most love to gather. Seventeen shows down, two to go – and after a trek that took them from California to New England and many far-flung points between, Dead & Company had chosen to wrap up Summer Tour 2019 in just about the friendliest surroundings imaginable.
